What if…

What If? The Power of Perspective in Taking Chances

What if you took the leap? What if you chased that dream, tried that new thing, or spoke up when your voice trembled?

But also—what if you failed? What if it didn’t work? What if people judged you?

And then, there’s the space in between: What if it wasn’t a total success, but it still taught you something? What if it led to an unexpected opportunity? What if it shaped you into someone stronger?

The question “what if” has the power to stop us in our tracks or push us forward. It can be the beginning of self-doubt or the start of something life-changing. The truth is, we often stop ourselves more than anyone else does. We let fear of failure, rejection, or even success hold us back.

The Empty Glass: What If I Fail?

This is where most of us get stuck. The fear of failure looms larger than the hope of success.

• What if I invest time, money, and energy into this, and it doesn’t work?

• What if I look foolish?

• What if I try, and it turns out I’m not good enough?

These are real fears, but they aren’t real outcomes—at least, not yet. The problem is that we often decide we’ll fail before we even begin. And in doing so, we make failure a certainty by never trying at all.

The Full Glass: What If I Succeed?

This is where courage lives. The understanding that risk and reward go hand in hand.

• What if I put myself out there and people actually support me?

• What if I take the chance and discover something I love?

• What if I succeed, and it changes my life?

No one guarantees success, but the possibility is always there. And we miss 100% of the shots we don’t take.

The Middle Ground: What If It’s Just a Step?

Not every risk leads to massive failure or overwhelming success. Sometimes, it’s just a step forward.

• What if I try and learn something new about myself?

• What if I don’t succeed, but I meet someone who opens another door?

• What if I start small, and it builds into something bigger?

Growth doesn’t happen in a single leap; it happens in steps. Each time you push past the fear, you strengthen your ability to take the next step.

The Choice is Yours

Fear is always going to be part of the process, but so is possibility. Every time you ask, “What if?” you have a choice in how you answer.

You can let it stop you. You can let it push you forward. Or you can land somewhere in between, learning as you go.

But one thing is certain: If you don’t take the shot, you’ll never know what could have been.
